Crockpot Country-Style Steak & Gravy
This is one of your father's favorite meals that he was raised on in Elkin. He taught me how to make it the way his momma did. This is an Appalachian take on country style steak and gravy. You will see it cooked in different ways if you look it up online.
Ingredients:
- 2 pounds cubed steak
- 2 packets peppered gravy mix (like Pioneer brand)
- 2 cups beef broth
- 2 cups water
- 1-2 cups flour, seasoned with salt and pepper
- salt & pepper
Preparation:
- Empty gravy mix packets into a crockpot and mix with water and beef stock.
- Heat a large skillet on medium high heat with a couple tablespoons of oil.
- Salt and pepper the cubed steak on both sides.
- Lightly coat each piece in seasoned flour, shaking off excess.
- When skillet is hot, brown cubed steak on both sides, about 1 minute or less per side and transfer to crockpot.
- Cook for 8 hours on low.
- Serve over rice with pea salad for a classic Walters dinner.
