French Onion Hamburger Steaks
I found this French onion soup shortcut gravy idea in a chicken recipe online and knew right away I wanted to use this to give a new flavor to our hamburger steaks with gravy. You can make this same gravy recipe with chicken and chicken stock instead of beef. I love the French onion flavor!
Ingredients:
- 2 lbs lean ground beef
- salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, dry mustard
- 1 tablespoon ketchup
- Worcestershire sauce
- 2 cans French onion soup
- 1 sweet onion, halved and sliced thin
- 1 tablespoon flour
- 1/2-1 cup beef broth
- Crumble beef in a large bowl and generously season (about 1 teaspoon each) with seasonings.
- Add about 5-6 dashes Worcestershire & ketchup, mix, and form into patties.
- Heat a large skillet with a little oil on medium high.
- Cook patties about 4 minutes per side and remove to a plate. (they will cook more in the gravy later)
- Add onions to the same pan and cook until soft, about 6 minutes.
- Mix the flour into the onions and cook 1 minute.
- Add soup and 1/2 cup beef broth to onions and stir.
- Add hamburger patties back into the pan and coat/cover with gravy.
- Cover and cook about 15 minutes on medium low to finish cooking hamburger steaks.
- Add more beef broth if gravy gets too thick.
- Serve over mashed potatoes or rice.
